Wed- continue to brainstorm  your layout for your Poster considering spaces for each of the 7 elements as well as the title

- start to transfer your idea onto the bristol board sheet provided

- introduction for sketchbook assignments- expectations - begin one

- VALUE & Shading exercises:        - making  a tonal bar  (just watch the beginning - the 4min point)

         - making a sphere    - drawing/ shading an apple

- watch videos and then make a tonal bar and sphere drawing in your sketchbooks *or on a blank sheet you can add to your sketchbook. IF there is time also try to draw and shade the image of the apple on the handout.

Wed, Thurs - continue with apple drawing and shading activity

Begin:   Contour drawing, Blind contour & continuous contour

This video is a continuous contour of the face

Activity: You are going to use the continuous contour method we learned to draw your partner. It is not a blind contour so you can look up and down as you draw their face.

* IN your Sketchbook you should now have: a value tonal bar, a sketch of a sphere that you have shaded, a sketch of the apple shaded, and after todays class 2 hand contour drawings and one contour drawing of a face.

Friday - How to shade using COLOURED PENCILS

Value- Types of Shading: Hatching, Cross-hatching, Contour-hatching, Scumbling and Stippling

- worksheet - try each type of shading

Coloured Pencil Shading - Layering techniques - watch video  and then try it! (shade 3 spheres)

 The Apple - adding colour- if you haven't yet shaded your apple, start here, this will be your "underpainting" - on top of which you will add your colours. Watch video first. begin at 2mins

Surrealist art - What is it?  A look at artists who created surrealist work; Marc Chagall

Do STEP 2 on the surrealist project sheet (if you are not done step one, we will use tomorrow to continue with brainstorming and start to develop your composition)

Pastel techniques  (do step 2 on these sheets)

Watch the videos in the prezi about how to create form with pastel as well as shape in an interesting way with pastel.


After viewing the first video in the prezi about how to use pastel to shade an apple and a pear- attempt to draw and then shade either the apple or pear into your sketchbook - demonstrating your understanding of how to build up layers to create various tones with pastel - creating a sense of depth and form with your pear or apple.

- Look at work by the following Surrealist artists: Salvador Dali, Frida Kahlo, Rene Magritte, and Marc Chagall    

- Also view work by some contemporary Surrealist style artists; Maria Trillidou and Marco Massoni 

- continue brainstorming for your Surrealist work in your sketchbook

Friday - work on sketchbook assignment 

- continue brainstorming for Surrealist work - make sure to find one image which has a range of values (shows form) so you can reference it when you draw and add either pastel or pencil crayon colour to your piece.

Monday, Mar 2nd - Surrealist Project -Review brainstorming - look at composition layout plans

- make sure to have one image you will reference for part of an illustration in your overall piece that will demonstrate form (using a range of values)

 Work period - you can begin your good copy

Tues, March 10 -fri 13th - work periods for Surreal Pastel Project - due friday

- should be framed and be sure to answer the reflection questions for your communication mark

Mon, March 23rd

Sketchbook - do an illustration of one of the characters from wind in the willows

- next work on one of your sketchbook assignments (if you already made your Wind in the willows Character) - part of Sketchbook mark

Intro PEN & INK assignment - value, form & line

video - how to work with the traditional pen and ink tools

basic tools video - hatching, cross hatching, stippling and Random lines shading (try)

- techniques sheet - textures you can create using different lines and marks 

- experimenting with the medium - look at some drawing samples - first draw them lightly in pencil into your sketchbook - then use the pen and ink to add value in the way you see done in the drawings ( hatching, cross hatching, stippling and Random lines shading) to create a range of VALUES.

- find an image to draw ( human face, landscape, building (exterior or Interior), interesting object, animal or plant) - must have a range of values - be 3D

Tues, March 24th

- warm-up - work on practise sketches using pen and ink techniques

- create a viewfinder - 6-8" any shape

-begin sketch - same size and shape as viewfinder on good sheet - use pencil and draw lightly

Wed-friday - Sketchbook time & work on characters for Garbage can contest

- also work periods for Pen and Ink assignment

- How to Critique a Work of Art - look at an example in class - do one with a partner on large paper

- finish up plaster casting letters & start brainstorming for eco art assignment (read one of the articles on a current eco- issue)

Some examples of environmental art - look at power point

Read an article about an environmental issue (provided in class)- and brainstorm with a partner how you could visually represent the problem discussed in your article - on a large piece of paper draw out your ideas
